The Patriarch

The life of St. Juan de Rivera

St. Juan de Ribera was one of the most fascinating characters of the Spanish 17th century. Of noble family and a great humanist, he was bishop, Patriarch, Viceroy and Captain General of the kingdom of Valencia. He was one of the world’s prelates who best applied the Council of Trent. To propagate its spirit he created the Royal Seminary of Corpus Christi. Here the tradition of the perpetual cult of the Eucharist is maintained.

This program tells the story of his exemplary life in troubled times. It also shows the artistic treasures of the Seminary: a Renaissance chapel whose frescoes evoke those of the Sixtine Chapel, the adjacent art museum and its splendid libraries.
